Temporary Import Permit

Intrepid Safaris will privately handle the application for the temporary import permit for your firearms prior to your arrival at a cost of US$195 per application. This might look like a lot of effort beforehand, but once you arrive in Johannesburg and your permit is ready, it will make the process smooth and hassle-free.

Temporary Import Permit

Intrepid Safaris will privately handle the application for the temporary import permit for your firearms prior to your arrival at a cost of US$195 per application. This might look like a lot of effort beforehand, but once you arrive in Johannesburg and your permit is ready, it will make the process smooth and hassle-free.

Entry Regulations:

All visitors require a passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit. Travellers must ensure that their passports contain at least one unused page.

It is imperative that travellers confirm the latest entry regulations with their nearest South African embassy or consulate.

Please advise us of your arrival date.

SAPS 520 Application Form

In the link you will find the SAPS 520 application form and a couple of example documents

On the SAPS 520 form you only need to complete the following sections:

Page 2 of 8 – Section D: Type of Permit

Tick Number 5 – Temporary Import or Export Permit (this applies when hunting in South Africa).

Page 2 of 8 – Section E: Particulars of Applicant

Complete the entire section from 1 through 25.4.

Sections 25.1 to 25.4 must be completed even if you are travelling alone, as these details are required for an emergency contact (spouse / partner / contact person).

Page 4 of 8 – Section G: Import and/or Export Details

Complete the section from 1 through 9.2.

IMPORTANT: The date format must be YYYY-MM-DD.

Page 5 of 8 – Section I: Details of Firearms

Complete all requested details about firearms and ammunition.

Note – Section I (1.7): Barrel Serial Number

This is not necessary if the barrel is solidly connected to the receiver (as with most bolt-action rifles) and the receiver already has a serial number.

This field only needs to be completed if:

  • The barrel has a different serial number, or

  • There is no serial number on the receiver and the only serial number is located on the barrel (as with some custom bolt-action rifles).

Page 6 of 8 – Section I: Declaration by Person Lawfully in Possession of the Firearm

Complete sections 3 through 4.4.

IMPORTANT:

  • Section 4.1 – Fill in your Name

  • Section 4.2 – Fill in the Date (remember the date format)

  • Section 4.3 – Sign the document

  • Section 4.4 – Fill in the Place where the document is signed

Page 6 of 8 – Section J: Signature of Applicant

Complete sections 1 through 4.

Additional Documents

We will require the following documents:

    • Notarized copy of the first page of your passport

    • Your spouse’s passport number if married (please include this on the SAPS form even if travelling alone)

    • Invitation letter from your PH (Intrepid Safaris will provide and complete this document)

    • Flight itinerary

    • Notarized US Customs Form CBP 4457 – see example

    • Letter appointing an Intrepid Safaris representative to apply for your permit

If the scanned copies are not clear, we may request the originals to be sent via FedEx or DHL (please allow 30 days prior to arrival).

On Arrival at Johannesburg International Airport (O.R. Tambo)

  1. Clear customs and passport control.

  2. Proceed to the luggage carousel and collect your baggage.

  3. Look for the security desk and inform them you need to sign for your firearms.

  4. After signing for your firearms, proceed through to the international arrivals hall.

  5. An Intrepid Safaris representative will meet you there and accompany you to the SAPS firearm office where you will finalize the permit and collect your firearm.

If taking a connecting flight from Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport), we recommend allowing a minimum of 3 hours between flights.

Firearms & Ammunition Regulations

The following are NOT allowed into South Africa:

  • Any automatic or semi-automatic rifles or shotguns

  • Any pistol or revolver (unless specifically approved for hunting with written motivation)

  • More than one rifle of the same calibre per person (maximum of 2 rifles per person)

  • More than 200 rounds of ammunition per calibre

Temporary Import Permits will not be issued to anyone under the age of 21.
